Jehangir Mehta '95
Jehangir Mehta ‘95, has been a participant in Food Network’s Next Iron Chef Redemption 2012, the runner-up at the Next Iron Chef 2009, a participant in the Iron Chef America, and a guest on Martha Stewart Living. However, patrons at Graffiti, Me & You, and Graffiti Earth, Jehangir’s restaurants in Manhattan, don’t have to watch television to be ardent fans. They simply love the food and the man who created it. Prior to opening his own restaurants, Jehangir was the highly acclaimed pastry chef at some of New York City’s finest restaurants, including Aix, Union Pacific, Mercer Kitchen, Compass, and Jean-Georges. He also the author of Mantra: The Rules of Indulgence (Harper Collins). Jehangir also runs a successful event management business that does catering for private events and weddings.
In his capacity as chef ambassador for the National Foundation of Celiac Awareness, Jehangir tours the country to encourage more fine dining restaurants to offer gluten free options to customers. Jehangir promotes the use of mushrooms in fine dining, and is the chef ambassador of the Mushroom Council. At all his restaurants, Jehangir’s dishes have been inspired by his love for spices and ingredients and his trademark style has been featured in not only traditional food magazines but also Vogue, and the New Yorker.
As passionate as Jehangir is about his work, he is even more passionate about helping children enjoy food and eat healthy. Ten years ago, he was a pioneer in this field when he started “Candy Camp,” a fun-filled private cooking class for children. Since then, he has worked closely with Whole Foods in a nationwide program called “Kids Food Adventure with Chef Jehangir.” He has also worked with other entities such as Scholastics, Children’s Museum of Manhattan, and at Kids Food Festivals. He is known best for his own kids’ initiative; “Gastro Kids After School,” and for the work he does as part of “Wellness In The Schools (WITS)” with kids at PS 107 in Brooklyn. Additionally Jehangir launched Chef Jehangir Pledge in collaboration with UMass Amherst Dining Services to promote practices that create better global citizens and increase actions supporting sustainability, social responsibility, and health and wellness as well as building community.
Jehangir is an alumni of The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, and prior to that, an alumnus of the Institute of Hotel Management, Catering, Technology and Applied Nutrition in Mumbai. Jehangir also holds a bachelor of arts degree in sociology from the University of Mumbai. (New York, NY)
